Possibly several hundreds of innocent people have underwent radiation overdoses due to equipment glitches or human fault involving the use of linear accelerators, a device that uses concentrated, pinpoint radiation to treat tumors and other abnormalities.
Commonly used to remedy brain and spine conditions with stereotactic radiosurgery, or SRS, the linear accelerators have been found on occasion to leak radiation to healthy tissue, resulting in injuries ranging from loss of balance to patients being left in near-comatose states.
A warning has been issued notifying doctors to be extra vigilant when using linear accelerators to implement SRS, a quickly growing form of radiation therapy used to aim at tiny tumors and other defects most often in the brain and spine but more recently in other parts of the body as well. The devices are used for standard radiation therapy but are often redesigned or retrofitted to perform SRS.
